I don’t know about 105 losses — the minimum cutoff to make this list — but the A’s will definitely be the worst team in the AL next year, barring any surprise regression from other horrid candidates (O’s, Royals, White Sox, Mariners).
The Astros probably have my vote for best candidate in 2012 to stink to high heaven and lose 100+ games.
And does it really matter in the short run if they finish 70-92 and 27 games out, or 50-112 and 47 games out?
The A’s are out of contention for the next 2-3 years no matter what they do now. Might as well sell on their desirable commodities and build for 2015, hoping to be in a new Stadium in San Jose by then.
I don’t think what Oakland is doing is making a mockery of the game. If I were a GM and knew it’d be tough to compete the next 2-3 years, I too would completely blow up my team and rebuild with as many low level high end minor league prospects as I can get. Take that and couple it with high draft picks and you have a shot at competing in a few years.
There is nothing the A’s can do to get past the Angels and Rangers, as presently constructed. May as well blow up the team and rebuild. Beane is being smart here, instead of wasting the owner’s time and money, giving off the illusion that this team can contend. The Mets & Orioles organizations should take note.

It’s not an issue.

Oakland wins the AL West, Baltimore wins the wild card… Texas blows the AL West, and gets eliminated by the O’s in the wildcard play in game. You just never know with these things.

The A’s will have to play the Angels and Rangers 38 times. That could be 30 losses for them, right there…

This is what the Mets should be doing, IMO.
Weeks is by default their 2012 All star right?
Or is Tyson Ross going to have a break out year?
