Sure glad the kick was inside the 25 yard line.
I’d never trust him in the rain on the grass to make anything more than a 35 yarder.
And would it kill him to kick a touchback once in a while?

It is annoying to see the other team’s kicker consistently kick the ball oaver and past the endzone while you’re guy doesn’t even come close…I know how you feel.

Crazy game. I never felt comfortable. The 49′ers were getting to Manning way too much in the 2nd half. I had a feeling that the Giants were going to need a points after turnover situation to win it – and that was before it went into OT.

I fear that SF may have given the Pats some film to look at – in how to stop Manning.

I suspect, the win the Superbowl, it’s going to come down to rushing the ball, having a pass rush, and special teams play. The Giants don’t have a running game. So, the Giants defense and special teams are going to have to be ON in the Superbowl.

Crazy, isn’t it? On the morning of August 25th the St Louis Cardinals were 67-63 (.515), 10 games out of 1st in the NL Central and 10 1/2 games out of the NL wild card. They went on to win the World Series. With 2 games to go in the NFL schedule the Giants were 7-7 (thanks in large part to a 5 game losing streak) with two tough opponents to play. They’re going to the Superbowl.

Why don’t things like that happen in my life?

Hey, I think you had a pretty impressive comeback!

I’m with you on that lack of trust.

It quite literally would kill him. He doesn’t have that leg at all.

In fact, the Giants have had one of the worst special teams units throughout my entire life. They don’t return punts or kicks very well and it’s been two solid decades since they had a kicker that could leg the ball out over 45 yards on a FG or put it in the endzone on a kickoff. It’s an organizational blindspot and has been for ages.

The Patriots don’t have any passrushers in the same class as SF does. The Pats can’t stop Manning simply because they won’t be able to attack him as consistently as San Francisco did.

They don’t have as effective a running game as they used to have but they have an effective-enough running game that will keep New England’s defenders honest. San Francisco had the best rushing defense in football in 2011. You can run at New England on the edge because they lack team speed.

Only twelve NFL head coaches have more than one Super Bowl victory. Can Tom C make it 13?

    8. January 23rd, 2012 | 1:36 pm

4 SB wins – Chuck Noll (Steelers – IX, X, XIII, XIV)

3 SB wins – Bill Walsh (49ers – XVI, XIX, XXIII), Joe Gibbs (Redskins – XVII, XXII, XXVI), Bill Belichick (Patriots – XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX)

2 SB wins – Tom Landry (Cowboys – VI, XII), Jimmy Johnson (Cowboys – XXVII, XXVIII), Tom Flores (Raiders – XV, XVIII), Vince Lombardi (Packers – I, II), Bill Parcells (Giants – XXI, XXV), Don Shula (Dolphins – VII, VIII), Mike Shanahan (Broncos – XXXII, XXXIII), George Siefert (49ers – XXIV, XXIX)

If not Belicheck makes it two with 4.

I respect Belichick but let’s hope Coughlin joins the ranks of the two-time SB-winning coaches. I absolutely love Tom Coughlin.

If Coughlin wins two, with one this year, does that make him a better coach, in Giants history, than Parcells?

Should the Giants win the Super Bowl this season that would tie Parcells’s franchise-leading mark for playoff wins (8) and championship trophies (2). That’s a pretty good place to be. Assuming Coughlin coaches the team again next season, he’d pass Parcells for second on the all-time wins list with 78 regular season victories to Parcells’s 77 (both behind Steve Owen’s team-leading 151 wins).

I don’t know if that makes him a better coach than Parcells but it certainly makes him just as successful from the point of view of success with the New York Giants.

Special teams were very good under Parcells. That’s the last time I can remember that the Giants’ special teams were consistently good.

That was literally a generation ago. It’s positively unacceptable that the Giants have allowed 21 seasons to pass since they were last competent (anecdotally, anyway) in the special teams department.
