Wow! 1 out of every 7 active MLB pitchers have undergone Tommy John surgery? Something is indeed up; and it isn’t GS, IP, or CG, that’s for sure.
Yup.
“Today, about 50 active major league pitchers have undergone Tommy John surgery — around one in seven.”
Figure [12 X 30 (teams)]divided by 50. That’s 1 in 7.
Someone get Dr Mike Marshall on the phone!
Seriously, I do agree that poor mechanics play a role in injury. The human body wasn’t designed to throw a baseball the way a ML’er does, I’m sure poor mechanics exacerbates it, as well as poor conditioning.
Of course you can have a guy like Mark Prior, who had perfect mechanics, end up on the operating table too. I don’t think poor mechanics helps but I don’t think perfect mechanics insulates one from surgery either.
