Noting one of the more famous games in baseball history, Arne Christensen asked about the longest outings by starters in the last 50 years.
Here’s a list on that to consider:

So, it’s been a quarter-century since a starter went 12+ innings in a game. Betcha that record sticks around for a while.





Interesting that it hasn’t been done since 86. And props to Charlie Hough & Tommy John covering the top 4 spots.
I still wonder how Tommy John got anyone out with his stuff. Of course, I could be a bit biased, seeing as I remember him towards the end of his career.
Just in case you were wondering, Marichal’s next start was 5 days later vs. Bob Gibson and the Cardinals. He matched up 0s with Gibson up to the 7th inning when he gave up a two run HR to Stan Musial. Marichal came out after that frame, losing the game as Gibson went on to hurl a CG ShO.
