Yankees Only Remaining Goals In 2012: August 28th & 21 Games

The earliest a team has clinched a playoff in the 20th century happened when the Yankees clinched on August 29, 1998.
And, the the biggest margin between a division winner and second place team is when the 1983 White Sox finished 20 games ahead of the the second place Royals (at season end).
At this point this season, it looks like these two records are the only thing left for the Yankees to achieve…

If Cashman were to paraphrase Rommel, it would be, ‘You people can afford to be optimistic, I cannot!’
I wouldn’t go that far, Steve.
The Red Sox still have a run in them, I think.

I think so too.
I’m worried that if the Yanks clinch too early, or have too big of a lead, Girardi will start managing like a moron again, going with a 6-7 man rotation, or resting players to lose battles and win wars…
I nearly forgot about that Raf. That was terrible. Seems to me that Torre’s way in 1998 was better- foot on the gas to the finish.
But the Yanks didn’t put their foot on the gas to the finish in 1998. They got to August 18th at 92-30, then went on a prolonged period of mediocrity, going 15-18 in their next 33 games. Torre then called a meeting, and the team refocused for the playoffs, winning their last 7 games.
