Russell Martin’s Last 14 Games

In his last 14 games, Russell Martin has a BA/OBA/SLG line of .277/.393/.574 (in 56 PA).
He’s picked the right time to get hot.
I wonder if this will fool the Yankees into signing him for next year?

I don’t think the Yanks would be fooled by some good #’s. If they re-sign him for another yr, it’ll be due to the lack of a better alternative. They have no one better (Stewart is only close to the same) the minors. There’s a couple of potential free agents worth pursuing but not enough to break the piggy bank.
We know the Yankees played hardball with Jeter come contract time. It will be interesting to see if they do the same with Martin this off-season. And, while we’re on the topic, it will be interesting to see how they handle Mo and Soriano (if the latter opts out).
If Martin gets signed it won’t be due to the last couple of weeks. The org will probably look at his defensive metrics.
That said, he made $7.5M this season, I would think a contract would have to be along those lines (7-10M/yr). The Yanks have his rights for another year, don’t they? So they can hold on to him, and let him walk next year, depending on how advanced Murphy, Romine & Sanchez are. Or sign him to a 2-3 year deal, or whatever. Of course, there’s no telling who will become available (via trade or non-tender) between now and then.
IIRC, he’s a free agent after this season.
Steve, better to let Martin walk, and sign/trade for who?

They’re re-signing him, for 1 more year at least. There’s nobody better who’s available, at less than a ruinous price.
