• The Last Time Derek Jeter Took A Walk

Any time that I want to, I can walk down to the 7-Eleven and grab myself a Slurpee. Think Derek Jeter can do that today?

I doubt it. I suspect, any time Jeter is out in public, he’s going to draw a crowd – especially in the New York and Tampa areas. That’s probably why he enjoyed his trip to Europe a few years back with Michael Jordan – because he could walk the streets there in peace.

Fill in the blank: The last time Derek Jeter took a walk down the street in America where he went without notice was ___________ .

It was probably some time in the late 90′s, if not before.

Would you like to live your life like that…never being able to walk in a mall or a supermarket or a busy street?

Sure, I know, Jeter can hire someone to go get him a Slurpee when he wants one…

    But, still…

I would hope that an athlete in Derek’s position doesn’t drink a slurpee. Ok, ok, maybe CC chugs those down with apple pies but not an athlete like Jeter.

I digress, back to your original question, would I like to live life like that?

My only frame of reference is the one I currently have, so it’ easy to say that I enjoy this anonymity a lot more, but maybe there are some positive things I can do with that fame – for example, bring attention to some things I’d like to support but never had the “fame”, and more than anything the money to do those things. Whether it be to help my junior high school, my high school, a community center that would support and help kids that are from socioeconomic conditions where these things aren’t readily available.

Yes I’m sure it can be tiring to be a player like Derek Jeter, but what I love most about the way he does it (and to a lesser extent, a player like Mo) is that you never hear about them in public — other than the random hook-up with some Hollywood starlet. He’s relatively out of the news and never a part of any controversy off the field (think Plaixco Burress).

For me, I think the better question is, would you handle the fame as well as Derek Jeter? And would you be able to stay out of the news and use that fame to have a net-positive influence rather than a negative one?

I think that’s the tougher question because ultimately you have to live “within the fame” you helped create with your talents and accomplishments on the field.

I think I could handle the pressure, what with the endless starlet easing my stress….And the money, let’s just say that I wouldn’t be the guy that you read about 10 years later, broke and under the bridge. Unless I owned the bridge and was checking on my employees with the toll money matching the books ;)

I may or may not be able to handle it, but I’m sure it’d be a lot of fun trying :D

Seriously, if I had my druthers, I’d love to be a LOOGY in MLB. Throw a couple of pitches, and collect my check. Maybe write a book. Travel the world, playing baseball in remote places… I’d probably be a lot like Bill Lee.
