Kid looks like a hitter. But, why did he last until the 13th round of the draft and sign for only $130,000? That’s very strange.

Let’s be clear that Tyler Austin is not a “mega-prospect” as that linked article suggests. Austin has an MLB future as long as his defense doesn’t drag down the limited value his offense will provide (given that he’ll never hit with enough power to truly justify a corner position).

But, that’s what Brian Cashman referred to him as, per the feature.

As he should, whether he is one or not, to try to pump up his trade value a bit, or to make it more credible when the Yanks demand a high price should other teams ask about him in a trade.

Nothing wrong with members of the organization trying to create buzz around a player. I just want to be clear that fans shouldn’t think of him in that way.
Also, to answer your question as to why he signed for “only $130,000″, that’s way over slot for a 13th rounder. He was a high school kid and, between having a college commitment and recovering from cancer treatment, it’s not surprising that he went in the 13th round. Thereafter, making $130K that late in the draft represents a lot more money than he could’ve expected.

Other teams could not care less how the Yankees evaluate one of their own players. All that matters in a possible deal is what value the other team places on a prospect. All the hype in the world won’t change that. I think it more likely Cashman is trying to get the fan base excited about the future in a winter in which the organization has not delivered anything to thrill the masses.
I’m not sure what “mega-prospect” even means.
