At the risk of throwing stones while living in a glass house, David Ortiz weighed in today on baseball’s latest scandal involving performance-enhancing drugs.
“When I first heard about that, I started saying that us as baseball players, we pretty much might be the dumbest athletes out of all the sports,” Ortiz said, referring to the recent report that linked Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Braun and others to a Biogenesis clinic in South Florida. “There’s a history of players doing stuff like that and later on getting caught. We’re talking about six, seven years and probably more going back. So how come in 2011, 2012, there are players still getting caught in the same situation?”
Ortiz, of course, was on a list of players who tested positive in a 2003 survey conducted by Major League Baseball, according to a New York Times report in 2009. And because he continues to put up big offensive numbers, even at age 37, skeptics will be suspicious about his performance.
“What I can tell you is I keep working hard and I keep trying my best,” Ortiz said. “When you work hard, things pay off. I don’t care if people have their doubts about the things you’re capable of doing. As long as your name is not being mentioned in a situation like that, I think it’s okay.”
