CC Sabathia’s fastball never topped 90 mph Wednesday night.

    This concern you?

As long as CC can locate and change speeds, he should be OK (for now).

But, if his velo loses another couple of MPH then he’s a very expensive Jamie Moyer, no?

It might be a concern. Give it until June 1. If he’s still topping out at 90MPH, chances are pretty good that it won’t get much higher. At that velocity, he can still be effective (see Pettitte, Andy), but like Coney late in his career, mistakes will get hit hard.

In a similar context. Mo looks like he’s muscling up to try to generate velocity (most of what I’ve seen has been 88-90 with an occasional 91) and consequently his command isn’t as sharp. He’s still getting guys out because of movement and location. Again, the margin for error goes down, especially against players that are more familiar with his stuff.

All told, right now, I’m very impressed with how they have played games, other than Hughes and barring two nights ago, Nova. Pen has been solid. Enough hitting. Cano is in one of his zones. Cisco’s playing a better game on both sides of the ball. Wells, Hafner, Youk providing a bit more contact hitting that we might have had out of those spots in the past. Enough long balls to cover mistakes by our pitchers. Got to get Ichi going. Gardner needs to start running earlier in the count. Could have stayed out of a DP in front of Wells last night if he’d been moving.

Boston’s schedule looks light for the next several series and they look revitalized. I don’t know it their pitching will hold up. Hopefully we jump the Rays and Jays while they are wobbly.

“For now…” I’m more concerned with the number of innings in his left arm, and the fact that his postseason ERA is not great since 2010.

Yeah, it’s concerning a little, but his velocity usually picks up when the weather gets warmer.
