It can’t all be the injuries, right?

The team appears to be holding its own third baseman back from returning from an injury while in desperate need of offense from that position.

CC’s been healthy and is 9-9 with a 4.65 ERA and exhibiting decline a lot predicted.

      Kuroda’s been healthy.

Pettitte’s been healthy and couldn’t have been expected to pitch much better at 40 or 41.

Hughes’s been healthy and is as inconsistent as he’s been in the past.

Hafner and Wells have been healthy and there were better options available in the offseason.

Alfonso Soriano could’ve been acquired before July 25th.

Brett Gardner, Ichiro Suzuki, Robinson Cano, and Lyle Overbay have all been healthy and very good, if not almost great, in some cases.

The team failed in its long term planning to replace Jorge Posada.

You can’t hold your own 3rd baseman back from returning from injury, not reasonably expect continued production from your SS, fail to take advantage of better opportunities in the market, have your starting rotation and bullpen remain in tact and largely healthy, fail to replace a retiring catcher, and blame a 4th place finish on the losses of Teixeira, Granderson, and Youkilis – as good as those players might be. Youkilis was only supposed to be a right handed DH/part time player once Rodriguez returned anyway.
