Today is the 51st birthday of Edgar Martinez and David Cone. Which, of course, made me think of Game 5 of the 1995 ALDS.

Did you know that there were 18 players in that game for Seattle – and, at one time or another, seven of the eighteen would play for the Yankees too?

Tino Martinez, Alex Rodriguez, Jay Buhner,Luis Sojo, Chris Widger,Mike Blowers andRandy Johnson were the seven.

Cone threw 147 pitches in seven and two-thirds in that game. Think that would happen with anyone today?

I remember it very clearly… That was the night I became a Conehead forever.

“Cone threw 147 pitches in seven and two-thirds in that game. Think that would happen with anyone today?” Probably not. But that’s because few managers would be so willing to destroy a pitcher’s arm to win a game. Only those who earned Joe Torre’s “trust” were so fortunate. Ask Scott Proctor.

      @ Scout:

Torre would’ve had to physically drag Cone out of that game. It was the right call and they camethatclose to winning it. We won’t see that again probably, but it happened plenty in the past.

I didn’t think I’d like David Cone because of his time w/ the Mets. I’m w/ #15. I became a Conehead that night, too.
