Paddy Matera is a graduate of Toms River North High School – Class of 2005. He was All County, All Conference, and All Shore while playing at Toms River North.
Afterwards, he attended Brookdale Community College – John Montefusco’s alma mater! There, he played third base as a freshman, and made Freshman All American at Brookdale, First Team All Region, First Team All Conference, and the All World Series team. As a sophomore, he played shortstop at Brookdale, and was First Team All American, First Team All Conference, and the All World Series team. Once completing his time at Brookdale, Matera went on to attend Lynn University where he played second base for Lynn University’s Division II National Championship team.
After school, he played FOUR YEARS in the Independent Leagues before he got picked up by the Cleveland Indians last summer. Matera is in their minor league system now. If I had to peg him as a player, I would say “Think Dan Uggla.” But, that’s just based on the stats – as I have never seen him play.
For sure, he’s living the dream. It will be interesting to see how he does this year. If he has a big season, it’s really going to help his chances.
I like rooting for local guys like this – and I wish him all the best.
