I thought “budgets matter, and balance sheets matter,” and Hal Steinbrenner felt more than two years ago, in March, 2012, that his organization would be able to field championship-caliber teams through the year 2014, with a payroll of less than $189 million in 2014 (which would reset the luxury tax rate to 17.5%), with Brian Cashman as the G.M.?

I thought Mr. Steinbrenner had said, “if you do well on the player-development side, and you have a good farm system, you don’t need a $220 million payroll?” Will a Morales signing not bring the payroll to more than $220 million in 2014?

“… Steinbrenner said the payroll was expected to be $210 million [in 2012], and he conceded that was about $10 million higher than he had planned. But when General Manager Brian Cashman asked to sign the free-agent pitcher Kuroda to a one-year, $10 million contract, he agreed to stretch the payroll…”

How many times has General Manager Brian Cashman asked Hal Steinbrenner to “sign free-agent pitcher Kuroda to a one-year contract,” or to “agree to stretch the payroll?”

Just watch. The Yankees will sign Morales. He will play 16 games and then go on the D.L. for an extended period…perhaps never to be seen again.

      @ Steve L.:
Morales doesn’t really fit at 1B or DH, I don’t see the Yanks signing him.
