This probably means that John Ryan Murphy is going to start against the lefty Keuchel who is devastatingly effective against lefties. After Keuchel leaves the game Mcann will be available to pinch hit for Murphy and they want to have a 3rd catcher in case of an emergency after Murphy leaves the game. Also, Sanchez is a righty hitter.

Why not Romine, then? I guy with some big league experience who can actually catch. Sanchez is more of a bat than a catcher.

Sanchez is an emergency catcher and potential pinch-hitter in extra innings, I suppose. They can start McCann, pinch hit with Sanchez and still have Murphy. Or they can pinch-run for McCann, bring in Murphy, and still have Sanchez if Murphy gets hurt.

because the odds of him actually catching are really low and he is a better hitter for pinch hitting purposes.

I thought it was a tribute to Jorge Posada, who was on the playoff roster in 1995 despite having only one inning of MLB experience under his belt. He actually got into a playoff game as a pinch-runner. Jorge Posada, pinch runner; imagine that.

I just find it crazy that a guy with TWO big league AT BATS in his career and ZERO hits would be kept on the roster for his bat.

Ouch for Austin Romine, no? I feel bad for him, that had to be hard to take.

Not really. Sanchez is known for his offense, Romine isn’t. If Girardi prioritized defense, Romine would’ve gotten the call.
