• When Was The Last Time The Yankees Had 4 Full Seasons In A Row With 87 Or Less Wins?

In a “full season,” the answer is: 1989-1992. (Actually, that was a five year run from 1988-1992. And, that 1989-1991 team was one of the worst in Yankees history.)

Of course, with 87 wins or less in 2016, the new answer would be 2013-2016.

If that happens, let’s please be sure to get that on Cashman’s Monument Park plaque.

Yes, because 85, 84, 87, and 87 wins is the same as 74, 67, 71 and 76 wins. Because a playoff spot, two 2nd place finishes and a 3rd place finish is the same as finishing 5th out of 7 three times, and 7th out of 7 once. Because having the 3rd worst record out of 26 teams in baseball in 1989-1992 is the same as having the 10th best record (or better than 10th, most likely, should they win 87 again this year) out of 30 teams from 2013-2015.

Over a course if a 162 game season, they all mean you were close, plus or minus, to being a team who loses as often as it wins. Again, CLOSE.

Oh, you mean the last 3 Yankee teams were just a few games over .500…well, that’s right, more or less. But the original comparison you were making is to a set of Yankee teams that would have, on average, finished 13 games behind this group of teams. And that’s a lot, even in a 162-game season.
