Since they went to the wildcard format in baseball, in the past 21 years, only the 1998 & 1999 Yankees, and the 2005 White Sox, have won World Series rings while losing two games or less during their post-season run.  (’99 Yanks and ’05 Chisox lost one.  ’98 Yanks lost two.)  With a win tonight, Cleveland can join the club.

Francona is doing a great job. He plays each game like it’s the 7th and decider. Bringing Miller in last night in the 7th with a 6 run lead is a good example. My 1st reaction was, why waste him? He might be needed tomorrow. But, Francona was right. Don’t open the door to the Cubs. Plus, he has Allen for 2 tonight if needed (or wanted).

I think that was Joe Torre’s mistake in ’04. (And, I loved and still do love Torre) Up 3-0 vs the Red Sox, he figured he had time. Last night, he probably wouldn’t have used Miller.

He did the same thing with Keith Foulke in the 2004 ALCS. That guy pitched all the time…because he was the best he had.

      @ redbug:
Man, you just HAD to bring up ’04 😉 I’ll always remember game three, when the Yankees just kept mashing hits, thinking, “ok, let’s save some hits for tomorrow”. I’ll always believe that the stats caught up to them, followed by the pressure that started before game 5. Of course, who really knows? Surely won’t ever say that the damned Sox were “better”!

I don’t know, calling for Rivera in gm 4 in the 8th inning tells me there was some sense of urgency there.
