Sabathia and Pineda will be free agents.  Tanaka can opt out.    Who does that leave for the season after this one?

The pitchers coming through the system, starting with the ones already here.
      They can re-sign Tanaka.
The real action is after 2018.

This situation was foreseeable 5 years ago, but Hal was too cheap to spring for some top-shelf FA starters. By 2019 (Evan’s year of hope), it will have been ten years since the last RING. Maybe the Yankees get lucky, and someone comes unheralded out of the Farm and becomes a star. AND they re-sign Tanaka, who stays healthy and great. Or, they could remain hapless for a number of years with “1992” pitching staff. Or is that “staph”?

Well, I’m assuming that several of their top prospects will break through in the next year or two. I’m assuming that one or two of them will be quality starters. And possibly one or two of the young pitchers already on their major roster will break through and become a decent rotation starter.

They can re-sign Tanaka. They can go after Otani when he gets posted. And Harvey, Keuchel, or if they opt out, Kershaw, Carrasco or Price.

They can trade some of their prospects for a good starter or two.

The point is they’re not bereft of options.
