Numbers don’t lie – although the home cooking sure helps. Question is: Can they keep it up? It’s not crazy at this stage to say they could still end up as an 86-win team. Pineda and Severino need to keep it up. And, Adam Warren can’t keep going the way he’s been throwing. Also, I know that Castro is due to crash soon. He always does.

Lots of Yankees playing above their career levels: Hicks, Headley, Castro, Judge, Pineda, Severino, Torreyes, Romine

Of course, with all but Headley and Castro, you could be looking at simultaneous breakouts. Not likely, of course. There are some Yankees underachieving to this point: Tanaka, CC, Sanchez, Bird. We hope that some of the underachievers will get rolling to take up the slack when the overachievers inevitably slump/get adjust to by the league

So, we’ll see. They’re 20-9, and that’s great, but not really significant yet. Last year, the White Sox were 22-10 on May 8th. They won another game on May 9, and got to 23-10, and were leading the Central by 6 games…and that’s as far as they got. They lost 6 of their next 7, and 12 of their next 16. They fell out of 1st before the end of May, and fell under .500 less than 5 weeks after May 9,

…they dropped under .500 for good in late July, and wound up 78-84, 16 1/2 games behind the Indians.

As I say, we’ll see. If they go ANOTHER 20-9 to get to 40-18, then that would be significant evidence they’re greatly improved over last year. They play the Astros 4 games at the Stadium this Thursday through Derek Jeter’s Number Retirement Day. If they win that series, that would be more solid evidence in their favor, because the Astros are playing well, and have more raw talent than the Yanks do.

Astros pretty clearly the stronger team all the way around.

But then, they started tanking 7 years ago, and are at least two years ahead of the Yanks in their rebuilding. The acquistions of Beltran, McCann and Reddick in the off-season are “finishing touches”. Astros might be ready to win it all.

Yanks are at least a year away from being a legit contender, maybe two.
